Perhaps the Honolulu Zoo's most famous resident, Rusti is a cross between a Bornean and Sumatran orangutan. Both species of orangutan (meaning "person of the forest" in Malay) are at risk of extinction, and in fact, many scientist believe that the orangutan will be the first great ape species to become extinct. Rampant habitat loss due to the oil palm industry poses the biggest risk, along with consequent issues like poaching and the pet trade. Some say this ape could disappear from free-ranging areas in as little as twenty years.
