Dead Bird, Peru (2013)
So what accounts for more than 3 dozen bird carcasses littering a beach south of Lima? The official (read: governmental) answer is rising sea temperatures, courtesy of El Niño. The warmer waters push the cold-loving anchovies -- who happen to be the primary food source of boobies, pelicans, and penguins -- about six to seven feet deeper than usual. But some unconvinced fishermen believe that the massive die-off (thousands in 2012 alone) is due to seismic testing by gas and oil companies.
